Menu help for an afternoon tea theme so far I have sandwiches....

#1 Guest_roslily_*

After a lightbulb moment of genius we have decided to have an afternoon/high tea theme for our reception.

It means that we can have a buffet (cheaper!!) but it a theme, so hopefully won't look naff!

SO I need ideas to give to caterer for a quote. So far I have sandwiches (with classic fillings). And for puds it will be cream teas or wedding fairy cakes. But what else? I have googled menu's but not come up with much. My mum is worried that we need to porvide enough food as it will be main meal of day (about 4.30pm).

So......I need food ideas that are classy and afternoon tea/garden party style....

Thanks girlys!!

I remember at boarding scholl when high tea was served at 4pm.

Think there was squash and juice as well as tea. You have to have those cute stacked plates (don't know the name) with the little handle on top. Fill them with scones and fairy cakes...........

Litlle canapes like smoked salmon on toast and little wraps.

Yes, and I get very excited about eveyrone else's themes too!!!

Love afternoon tea theme! Loving all the suggestions, think the cornish pasties and salmon sounds delicious!

What about including a bit of picnic theme into it? Large porkpies and english chutneys? Or ploughmans style food, with crust bread, lots of different cheeses, ceddar, stilton etc, pickled onions and gerkins. Slices of proper english ham and of course mustard.

For cakes of course the aforementioned cream teas, but also classics like carrot cake, coffee and walnut, lemon drizzle and of course chocolate. Large cakes could be cut into slice which might make htings a little less expensive.

Check eBay for cake stands, you can still get some lovely 50s ones on there reasonably priced.

Just to add in that the whole salmon is a very traditional victorian high tea dish. Also platters of cold meats and pies would be served.

Different to afternoon tea - but the beauty is you get to combine them!!

(knowing victorian menus is part of my job! - lol!)

Oooh what a fab theme!
How about a nice cheeseboard with all different cheeses and crackers? You can also get those cakes made of cheese some people have these instead of wedding cakes! There are some places where you can get all the minature food like minature fish and chips but that might not go with the theme too well

We had a posh afternoon tea when hubby proposed, it was lovely, served on a tiered stand, smoked salmon, cucumber and cheese sarnies (cut in to fingers) if I remember rightly, tiny cakes, scones with jam and cream, tea and champagne, it was delightful!!!!

Loving the theme!!

I was also going to suggest this high tea means you can add pretty much anything so long as it is cold.... you could add cheeses (perhaps a cheese stack these are increasingly popular)

I would also have strawberrys and cream or raspberries and cream in little cups as they are lovely with afternoon tea.

You could get the little tea holder favours below

http://www.aweddingl...exd.asp?id=3439

I think this is a great theme smile.gif x

Your theme sounds a fab idea and I dont think you would nece. need lots of variety and different items as this may take away from your original concept. You could do several different sandwiches using different breads and maybe cripsbreads etc. With cream scones with straws complimented by tea, champagne or Pimms. Add to that a few extras eg. sausage rolls, cheese board, salad bowl. Think you guests will be well impressed. Just make sure there is enough to go round!

How about game pie and potato salad? (layered veg pie as an alternative)?

Have a look at Mrs beaton's recipes online for suggestions on afternoon teas there are some lovely things that can be modernised.

A friend of mine had this theme. There were no centre pieces on the tables as she had lovely high cake stands laiden with sandwiches cut into triangles, home made pork pies, coleslaw, pot salad, scones & clotted cream, slices of traditional fruit cake. The top of the cake stand was decorated with a tiny posey of flowers. She had spent the months before going round local charity shops and buying 'vintage' cups, saucers and side plates so every guest had a matching set. Drinks were orange squash, home made lemonade and Pimms. There was little in the way of decor due to the venue, but dotted around were floral arrangements in wire bird cages. I hope this helps.

Thats a great theme, we are also having that sort of thing but instead have the emphasis on the actual tea i.e. peppermint tea, english breakfast teas.

Scones are very good, you could give out biscuits and have different selections of jams!
