Hi I'm new - so new we havent even got a date set yet! But engaged and Im thinking about all things weddingy. I am from New Zealand living in Scotland. Planning on getting married in NZ 2011/ 2012. So I'm thinking a Scottish/ NZ theme for the wedding as I've spent the last 5 years in Scotland and will be here for a lot longer (but none of my family have been out they all in NZ). H2B is Scottish so he'll be wearing a kilt thats about as far as I've got for definate. Not sure about the NZ part of the theme yet. But will probably have help from home for that.
Anyone on the forums Scottish? Got any suggestions for my theme? So far I have ideas:
tartan, kilts, whiskey, shortbread, haggis (but that would be difficult in NZ), piper (of course! Mum already organised a piper for our enagement party while we were holidaying in NZ over christmas is was fab!), ceilidh music/ band (although this is proving difficult in NZ, where if it were in Scotland theres loads of course!).
This is the start of a long journey! All suggestions welcome.

Hi - welcome to WI forum!
What about combining the 2 national flowers/plants eg the Thistle for Scotland and Silver Fern, or Kowhai (hope that's right?) as an emblem or with a monogram which could run through the stationery. You could pick up colours from the tartan H2B will be wearing. Not sure if it's possible but maybe you could combine the two plants for the flowers or centerpieces.

ooh thanks thats a good idea! (not sure what tartan he'll be wearing yet thats a plan in progress, not many hire companies in NZ for that sort of thing - so looking at buying instead). Centre pieces sound good too. Not sure whats in flower at the time of year... cos I'm not sure of a date yet hehe.

You can get Scottish Country Dance bands in NZ maybe ask them see if they do ceilidh stuff....

I'm Scottish and my Fiance is also but he spent 9months in NZ we almost went there for our honeymoon but it was a big bit out of our honeymoon budget. He does SCD and there are def dancing groups there with bands.

How about tying in rugby parts into the theme, something for the boys? Offer Henna tattoo painting for guests during the evening reception?

As favours (i stole this from someone who posted this and i googled for it) give out seeds of a traditional NZ flower or plant? Hmm or could this be a customs problem?

I'll try to remember to think about it more smile.gif

Welcome and have fun planning X

What about having Quaich's as part of your reception or at the end? We're giving mini ones out at our party when we come home as favours and we have bigger ones to pass round before the party ends filled with either whisky, vodka or orange juice. Maybe not everyone's "cup of tea" but I like the tradition.

Yeah I had this thought about plants as well - my mum said a cousin gave away baby fern plants in shot glasses as favours - but certainly wont be able to give this sort of thing to the Scottish guests as they wont be able to take them back.

I'm thinking the favours will probably be homemade shortbread/ tablet in pretty packages of some description. (just need to find someone at home who can make that sort of thing) - perhaps a heart shape with imprints of scottish thistle for the NZ guests and fern for the Scottish guests.

Acutally I had thought of something like this - going along the scottish route... I do have a small one I was given when I had my first job in Scotland. The only thing about I had a problem with - if letting everyone drink from the same cup?? spreading germs/ menigicoccus whatever its called... or perhaps buying shot glasses for each individual or using the plastic ones (like the ones they give for sample tasting). I certainly thought getting a bottle of whisky to share amongst the guests, orange and vodka (or some other alcholic drink sounds good to have an option though) - have read on previous posts the bride and groom going around the tables individually at the reception offering the drinks and having a chat which sounds good. Might go and research quaich's now on google, thanks!
